Hi-Cap Identification Process Starts Soon
Our highly capable identification process starts soon. It will happen in two phases.
Phase I – Universal Screening
- All 1st- and 2nd-grade students will participate in the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) screener as part of their school day between early December and mid-January.
- Existing reading and math data for students in grades 3-7 will be used for Phase 1, including iReady and Smarter Balanced Assessment data.
After Phase I screening is completed, students who qualify will receive a letter via U.S. mail notifying families of their child’s invitation to participate in Phase II of our identification process.
Phase II – Additional Testing
- All students in grades 1-7 who demonstrate high levels of proficiency on the assessments reviewed in Phase I will be invited to an additional testing session during their regular school day. During this test, students will participate in the comprehensive Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).
- Students may also be nominated to participate in the additional testing by a teacher, family member or community member. We welcome nominations, especially in circumstances when a standardized test may not accurately reflect a student's capabilities. Nominations are due by Friday, February 21.
